Soy profesora de idiomas y llevo 6 meses enseñando inglés en Castellón de la Plana y Valencia. Quiero que mis alumnos disfruten estudiando y que para ellos el hablar este idioma se convierta en algo natural, pero veo que es muy difícil aquí. Se agobian porque necesitan aprender mucho, bien y rápido. Sí, tienen interés, pero no están muy ilusionados, cosa que no les pasa con otros idiomas. Lo que hacen habitualmente es buscar un profesor por necesidad: ya sea porque han de aprobar un examen o porque lo necesitan para trabajar.

Algunos alumnos estudian inglés comercial de una manera muy curiosa. Les interesa solo cierto vocabulario, ciertas expresiones, usar el idioma en una situación de negocio concreta, pero les da exactamente igual la lengua inglesa como tal.

¿Cómo es posible que, después de muchos años dedicados al estudio, mucha gente joven no sea capaz de comunicarse en situaciones de la vida cotidiana? Muchos alumnos me comentan que cuando termina la clase acaba su contacto con el idioma. No lo escuchan en la radio, ni en la televisión, ni en el cine. Los estudiantes polacos, suecos o portugueses están acostumbrados a oír inglés diariamente. Al encender en casa sus televisores buena parte de los programas está en inglés, tanto los dibujos animados como sus series favoritas. Así, casi sin darse cuenta, siguen aprendiendo y para ellos el inglés no es una asignatura más sino que forma parte de su vida. Aprenden mientras hacen otra cosa. Por este motivo, yo siempre digo que habría que acabar con el doblaje del cine y de la televisión en España. Además, yo creo (y supongo que los directores de cine) que una película debe estar en el idioma que ha sido creada.

¿Por qué la gente quiere estudiar inglés con un profesor nativo? Está claro que si una persona quiere aprender inglés tiene que interactuar con hablantes nativos de inglés tanto como sea posible. He visto en España que algunos profesores nativos no están capacitados para la enseñanza del inglés. Sin embargo, la gente les considera dioses que van a solucionar sus problemas de pronunciación y luego los alumnos no les entienden nada. Charlando no se aprende un idioma, mucho menos cuando eres un principante. Los españoles le dan demasiada importancia a tener un perfecto acento británico, muy poca al saber y entender lo que están diciendo. Algunos nativos abusan, solo conversan en la clase, cosa que a los españoles les encanta hacer. Los estudiantes tienen poca actitud para aprender, es decir, se lo toman como una obligación pero pocos quieren esforzarse más allá del curso.
Los mejores profesores nativos que he tenido han sido profesores nortamericanos. Me enseñaron que los Verbos Compuestos (Phrasal Verbs) son la parte fundamental y cotidiana para comunicarse, ya que son componentes vitales del inglés hablado. A mis alumnos no les gustan mucho, pero siempre se los enseño, los uso constatemente en las clases porque este es el inglés de verdad, ya vayas a Nueva York o Londres.
